Domesaurus' journey to the water

22092010 - WEDNESDAY
The truth revealed as Domesaurus meets the water.

0700
Early in the morning, Domesaurus started its journey to the water with the 3 girls of the 3S group from the RST hostels.

Domesaurus taking a rest with the girls.

0845
We arrived at HBP with arms that no longer seemed to be our arms.
Then we headed for breakfast for a stomach-refill and later followed by RAG 132 class at 10am by Pn Wan Mariah.

1130
Domesaurus continued its journey again to the water.
We reached the pool about 12 30pm and began to install the bottle pole and 'dome'.

1330
This is the full version of Domesaurus.

Domesaurus with 3S.
1400 - The truth.
Domesaurus went into the smaller pool at first.
The result: It almost touched the floor of the 2 feet deep pool.

Then, we decided to take Domesaurus to the challenge at the bigger pool which is at least 4 feet deep.

The TRUTH: IT WAS HALF AFLOAT!
We got half wet when Domesaurus went sinking halfway in the water.
While we were on Domesaurus, we managed to balance ourselves by standing for at least 5 seconds :D
After that, we got a little unbalanced and fell into the water.
We thought that getting wet was more fun!
Well, unfortunately Domesaurus got hurt during the water test.
The links of the bottles were broken.
BUT the flag was still dry!

Here's a word from the Group Leader of 3S: Sue Anne

Here are the Actors of 3S for Domesaurus.

The day ended well as we had fun and experienced a lot of new things with Domesaurus.
Domesaurus couldn't float well due to the lack of bottles underneath.
It's good to get to see the flaws of Domesaurus as we can gain something in the end of the day.
We have learnt so much throughout the birth of the Domesaurus and its journey to the water.
From the cutting of bamboo, lashing, collection of plastic bottles, the fixing of bottles and
the 1hr 45mins journey to the water,
Domesaurus taught us how to calculate, budget and maximize the use of resources we have.
Most important of all, PARTICIPATION of the actors was the key to the birth of Domesaurus.
INITIATION was then the key of bringing Domesaurus to life.

Week 6

We're hot-gluing flattened 500/600ml plastic bottles at home during the break!

Friday 3 September 2010

Week 5

we used raffia string to tie the bamboo together..

the bottles were assembled at every side of the raft.

Wednesday 1 September 2010

Week 4: Construction of Base

This week was spent lashing the bamboos together to form a solid water-worthy base.
Here's Sze Jie in action!

And Sue Anne...

And since I was the camera-yielding person. No photo of me lah. So sad. But I did do the lashing too!!!

We used raffia string for the lashing. Hope it lasts! May our domesaurus float.

Till the next time!

Week 3 : Arrival of bamboo

and so, the bamboos arrived.
There are 16 of them each measuring around 1.6m
Unfortunately some of the bamboo has got holes.
Good thing that we bought quite a number of them.

This is Sue Anne.

This is Sze Jie.

Photos by Stephanie. These are the bamboo in half.

Job well done in less than 2 hours :)

Next week: Construction of the floor/base of the floating dome.

Week 2 : Final plan for materials and model

Hello again,

here is our group name:
3S

&
name of our floating dome is
DOMESAURUS

We visited a shop today to survey on the materials for Domesaurus.

For economical and environmental reasons, we decided to use
recyclable materials to build Domesaurus.

Finalized materials:
Bamboo for base
Plastic bottles to build up the hemisphere (Dome)
Raffia string for joints
Bolt & nut for top joint of dome

Measurement for bamboo base:
150cm X 150cm
(previously was 120cm X 120cm)
We changed the measurements because the bamboo
we tend to buy comes in a length of 300cm.

Measurements for the dome:
Diameter of base - 130cm
Height - 100cm

Next, we finalized the model using Google SketchUp.

Next week: Purchase and collection of materials.

Week 1 : Discussion

9 August 2010
We were having our first discussion at Anjung Budi while having our lunch.

Rough sketches on idea of our floating dome.

Measurement of the base of the floating dome:
1.2m X 1.2m

Next week: Check out materials for floating dome.
